The Difference Between Managing and Leading

We often confuse managing with leading, but they are not the same.

When I first stepped into a leadership role, I made the classic mistake: I tried to replicate my own methods instead of empowering others to find their own. I had mastered my job. But leading meant something entirely different, it meant building a space where others could master theirs. Leadership is not about doing more.

It’s about letting go. It’s about trust. Coaching. Seeing people not just as resources, but as potential. I didn’t learn this in a classroom. I learned it on the field, when I stopped micromanaging and started mentoring. Leadership isn’t an extension of competence. It’s a transformation of purpose. How did you learn the difference?
